Feva Nationals 25-28th May 2013

Missed the meeting on Sunday 14th April, more helpers still required, talk to Nick or Martin for more information or pass your name directly to [email protected] . We need you for our biggest ever event.

****** Online Entry forms now available from http://www.rsfeva.org.uk/?page_id=400  ******

This year the club is to hold the Feva Nationals on the end of May Bank Holiday. This event will likely attract 100 plus boats of a national junior class. We would love to see some of our cadets take part in this event and if anyone is interested in helming or crewing to please contact me directly.

My plea today is for helpers for this event. Like cadet week we will have a large number of children and adults at the club. A number of people have come forward already but we would welcome some more to carry this event off as a success.

This will probably be the largest junior open event the club has ever seen. Your help will be very much appreciated.

Sara Speller Fund Raising

Published by under Members

As some of you know after two very tricky and stressful pregnancies, and following the recent birth of our daughter, on 8th February 2013 I found a lump in my breast. I knew straight away that it was a tumour and Southend Hospital confirmed our fears. In fact, I have 2 tumours and a cancerous lymph node.

Southend Hospital Breast Unit strive to be the best in the country and offer such fantastic care, both medical and emotional, along with their counterparts in oncology and radiotherapy.  I am grateful to be in good hands and they tell me they can treat my cancer successfully.

Anyone who knows me well will know that I am not one to sit back, wallow in it, and let the world pass me by in a haze of depression.  I am determined to make this a positive experience and really feel that I am meant to make a difference for other people.  Let’s be honest, without other people raising money and being equally determined, this disease would be neither treatable nor beatable.

As my hair-loss with the treatment seems inevitable, I have decided to have it shaved before it falls in an attempt to raise some much needed funds for the Southend Hospital Bosom Pals Appeal through sponsorship.

Please help me make that difference, I can’t do it on my own.  In return, I promise to concentrate on getting better at the same time as raising some much needed cash for ground-breaking equipment.

We can all do our bit to help, please donate,   One day, it might be your Mum, Sister, Daughter who needs that vital equipment and I would love to be able to say we helped.

Thank you Sara XXX

We aim to raise £500,000 to improve mobile breast screening for women of South Essex. This will fund two new mobile units equipped with the latest digital screening equipment, helping provide shorter examination times, better technique & image quality, helping to detect early and small cancers.

Shoebury Common Flood Defence

Published by under Club Notices

Thorpe Bay Yacht Club has long had the unencumbered use of the foreshore and our launching facilities. Rising global sea levels will, at some point well into the future, affect our facilities.

Shoebury Common Leaflet

Southend Council have decided that the sea wall between the Coastguard Station and St Augustines Avenue needs to be raised now to prevent us being affected by the rising levels. The argument has long been raging as to whether this is needed now. Many believe that it is not – but the council believe that it is.

Link to Southend Councils Proposal Document
Link to details of Southend Councils Public Consultation

Southend Council have proposed a lifting of the sea wall and will give TBYC a sliding flood gate entrance to the water. The proposals will be up for Public consultation shortly with a meeting having been arranged for all members of the public to come and consult with representatives from Southend Council on Monday 22nd April at Shoebury High School Wendy Owen Hall, which is accessed through Caulfield Road (not the Sports hall as previously thought) at 7.30 pm (not 7 pm).

A Campaign group headed up by Peter Lovett has been discussing this and alternative schemes with the council and all interested parties. The alternative scheme is attached.

I believe that the Council’s proposed scheme will have a detrimental impact on our club and its use of the foreshore. I would, therefore, like you all to look at the attached alternative scheme, which would not impact as much with our Clubs use of the foreshore and will not cost Southend Council tax payers as much.

It would be good to see as many of you as possible at the Shoebury High School meeting on the 22nd April and support Thorpe Bay Yacht Club and the local community in making the right and informed choices for Southend-on-Sea.

Faithfully yours

Nick Elmore
