Well done to the TBYC Team Racing Squad competing at the British School’s Championships

Published by under Cadets,Nationals,Racing

Thames Valley 2014 TBYC 33 The standard of racing was extremely high at this year’s BSDRA Thames Valley Team Racing Championships at Bray lake.
There were 21 teams competing, aged between 12 and 18 in a total of 106 races on Saturday 7th June. During the first set of races the teams are seeded into four divisions, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Novices. Our young TBYC team won enough races to be placed in the Bronze division, which was an achievement in itself.
They continued to communicate and sail well as a team, and considering their overall age, their sailing was impressive, against much older  sailors. They performed a number of Pass-backs, Mark traps and Pinning maneuvers and were determined right to the end.
It may have been a most daunting experience at times, but they achieved a pleasing =12th place out of 21 teams. They were awarded the Best Newcomers’ Cup!

Summer Ball 2014 – Dress Code

Published by under Bar,Catering,Social

Following a couple of enquiries, I would like to confirm that the dress code is ‘smart’ rather than strictly ‘black tie’.  Lounge suits/blazers may be worn if preferred.

If you haven’t already purchased tickets and would like some, there are a few left.  Please let me know if you’re interested, if possible by Wednesday 11th June.

Balcony is now Open and the Beer is cold

Published by under Club Notices

Having helped clean and move back all the Balcony furniture this morning (thanks to all those that helped), it wouldn’t be fair to keep it a secret. The Balcony is now open and following a problem with the chiller I can guarantee that the beer is now cold. So why not come and watch the racing tonight or enjoy the sun all day tomorrow. We know people have missed it.

There are a few things that still have to be done but we made the fitters stay very late on Friday just so we could use it.

Southerly Cup – Congratulations to Nigel Campling

Published by under Club Notices,Members

Nigel Campling RYS

Congratulations to Nigel Campling for winning the 2014 Southerly Regatta

The 2014 Southerly Regatta took places at the home of sailing in the UK, the Royal Yacht Squadron. The race briefing on Sunday 25th May required all crew to wear blazers and tie (of course), and was followed by an excellent hog roast looking out to the Solent.

In Race 1 started on Monday with 3 knots of west bound tide and light winds on the start line. Southerly 42RST, Legato, were first to the mark and lead for the rest of the race, taking the canon and the win by a few seconds to Southerly 115, Dutch Courage with a gaggle of 38’s coming in behind.

Tuesday dawned to a little more breeze and again more drizzle which quickly cleared. The 2nd race started with a good 10-15 knot beat up towards hill head and anti-clockwise around the Solent. With the race officer being told that the fleet only draw 1m with the keels up he gave the option to prove this and to sail across a very visible Leap Spit, which some competitors did to great gains.

Race 4 was a longer affair with many buoys around the Solent. With 2 knots of tide pushing boats over the line, the start was lively, but clean. The North Sails Rib was out shouting words of advice to all boats and the fleet split into two packs. The Southerly 46RS, Gneiss Fantasy, took the final cannon of the event and Southerly 38, Distraction taking the win on corrected times, with Southerly 38, Bettina 2nd and Southerly 42RST, Legato 3rd.

Prizegiving that evening was held at the RYS “Castle” with a champagne reception and an excellent three course dinner. Winner of the Southerly Cup for the second time (2012 & 2014) : Nigel Campling, Southerly 115, Dutch Courage of Cowes.
