New Cadet Racing

Another chance to sail in the ‘New Cadet Series’ and not so windy this time…. hopefully!

See you Sunday.

  • The new course is aimed at all Cadets who can sail and to wish participate in a race with a shorter course, more laps over a reduced time.
  • There will be prizes for the older cadet as well as the less experienced sailors. A coach in a dedicated Support Rib will support the races.

Races will be raced under the TBYC Sailing Instructions. http://www.tbyc.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/TBYC_2015_SI.pdf

Your guide

  • There will be an optional briefing at 17.00 (1 hour before start.)
  • The race will be a windward leeward course starting at the committee boat. It will be the second start with the Fast and Slow Monohulls at 18.03. (Time plus 3 minutes).
  • First check the number of laps on the blackboard at the top of the slipway and / or check with Support Rib on the water. Your race can be shortened by the Support Rib.
  • Once on the water, go to the Committee boat and look for the last number on the BACK of the boat, which indicates D on the diagram / or check with Support Rib on the water.
  • On the starting signal, you will cross the line and beat to the CADET BUOY, which is a special buoy marked with a C. This will be your windward mark.
  • Check whether a Red or Green flag is displayed on the Committee boat; Red – leave marks to port, Green – leave marks to starboard.
  • Run or reach down to the course. You must NOT go through the line on the downwind leg (as written in the sailing instructions).
  • Beat up through the line and onto the Cadet buoy and continue until the displayed number of laps are completed.
  • As you cross the line the committee boat will record your time. They will not give you a signal. The Support Rib will blow a whistle unless is needed elsewhere.

Cadet Week Shark Team meeting

Published by under Bar,Cadets,Club Notices

Would all Shark team, support boat personnel and parents, meet With Rupert Snow in the commodore bar at the club, this Thursday at 7.30 for a half hour meeting?

There will need to be considerable parent support to enable the Island Camp to go ahead and it would be good to get an idea of how many tents etc. we can get hold of.
So as to be able to communicate effectively please could you email Rupert ([email protected]). This is particularly important if you are not going to make the meeting on Thursday.

Thank you

Rupert

Post-Cadet Week Adult Party!

Published by under Bar,Social

We have decided to hold a party to celebrate the end of cadet week for all the adults (no children except cadets 16 years and over please!) on Saturday 8th August from 8.00pm.  We will be entertained for the evening by the fantastic DJ, Micky G – so come and relive your youth from Churchills days!  We won’t be offering catering on the evening so make sure to eat before coming down and indulging in that toffee vodka!

If you would like to join us, tickets are priced at just £5 each and will be available to purchase from behind the bar from this Wednesday, 22nd July.  You can buy tickets right up until the evening of the event.

All members of the club are very welcome, not just cadet parents!

I look forward to seeing you there.

Sara

Peter Blomfield

Published by under Members

It is with great regret that we have to inform members of the death of Peter Blomfield.  He was a long standing member of TBYC, sailing his Sandhopper, ‘Talitrus’, for 31 years.  Peter was a founder member of the Sandhopper Association undertaking the roles of Class Captain, Treasurer and class measurer for many years.

An enthusiastic supporter of the club and sailing in general, his sail achievements were numerous including a passage across the Channel with John Evans in ‘Talitrus’ in 2005.

Peter’s funeral will be on Friday 31st July, at 12.40 pm, at Southend Crematorium.  Family flowers only.  Donations would be most welcome on the day, or c/o Guivers of Southchurch Road or direct to Havens Hospices whose care of Peter was wonderful.

Rib Launch and Recovery Duty

The use of Ribs to supplement our displacement Safety craft SS2 and 3 has become a common sight at TBYC.  Our Ribs provide excellent speed of response in an emergency situation, allowing the easy laying of the Start buoy and use of Special marks as well as taking the Race officer and displacement crews to their boats.  In order for us to enjoy use the Ribs they need Launching prior to the race and recovering after every one is ashore.

The task of launching and recovering the Ribs has now been added to Dutyman for the rest of July and August to keep track of who volunteer to do this essential job.  At the end of this time the Sailing Committee will review the situation going forward.

Treating launching and recovery as two separate duties we have 44 duties to cover over the next two months.  Rob Baily has kindly volunteered to cover this Saturday Launch and Recovery, with Toby Speller taking 18 of the duties straight away.  The remaining launch and recovery duties need covering if we are to see Ribs supporting our Weekend Racing.  If you can help, please volunteer through Dutyman, or email Janet, Graham and I to get your offer of cover added on to Dutyman.

Thank you all for your help and support in enabling the use of Ribs to continue at TBYC.  Without your help it won’t happen.

Jeremy Sandford

(Rear Commodore Racing)
