Summer has arrived just in time for our first Oppie Beach club. We start this Saturday at 14:00(changed by the back of the clubhouse). Oppie Beach Club is open to all cadets and adults new to sailing who wish to get on the water for some informal tuition, practice skills form last year or just get in a boat with someone else for the first time. Parents are expected to help hold boats in the water if their child is participating.
On Friday at 7pm we will be going down to the dinghy park to look at how to rig different boats. This is useful for cadets and adults who don’t know or can’t quite remember how to rig and Oppie, Pico or Laser.
In the bar before and after the rigging session I am going to trial a Sailing kit exchange where you can bring any unwanted or too small kit and donate it to the cadets, if the kit is what you need for this year then you may take it and will be expected to provide a small paper donation do the Cadet fund. Thank you.
Hello,
A big thank you to all members who have visited the club over the last two weeks and during the school holidays.
I’m finalising a “balcony menu” for the summer which I’ll publish very shortly now the sun is starting to shine!!
Regards

13/04/2018 Cadet Night Friday
Sailor’s meeting 7 pm
Dear Cadets and Parents,
This is an invitation to the “traditional” sailor’s meeting, this Friday, Cadet night, 7 pm start. All sailors welcome. I will start with a short de-brief for those who were not frightened of the very light winds last Sunday.
Topics of meeting:
light wind sailing
climbing
watch your sail!
Discussion, video, demonstration with our racing Optimist sail
There will be 3 days of Cadet Race Training and a Mini Race series THIS FRIDAY, SATURDAY and SUNDAY for 11+ year old boys and girls. The training will be progressive and it is hoped that Cadets can attend all three days, however, less is still fine. The training will cater for all abilities, but the minimum requirement is to be able to sail a beat, reach and run.
We also welcome new Cadet members; a great way to meet new friends, while training and having a good time.
Dates:
Thursday 12th April 7.30 – 8.15 Training Room – Briefing and a recap on Rules, Starting and Safety
Friday 13th April – Meeting/briefing (changed) 9.00 am – On the water 9.30am
Saturday 14th April – Meeting/briefing (changed) 9.30 am – On the water 10.00am
Sunday 15th April – Meeting/briefing (changed) 10.30 am – On the water 11.00am
Parental help will be most appreciated to help on ‘Polly’ with Safety and Scoring etc. I have two volunteers, but another one or two would be great.
Very light wind was troubling all of us, but we pushed the boats out anyway.
Cadet RIB and Polly was manned by parents, thanks for all the support on the land and on the water.
10 sailors in 8 boats, in Picos and Optimists experienced very light conditions and learnt skills to move ahead. There was bait placed tactfully in an Optimist hull, giving the sailors motivation to try to move, and they all did. This was followed by a paddling race. There was more discussion than push and the strong team was beaten by the experienced single hander.
Our team is building well, I am looking forward to focus the next session on starting and stopping once more before we move on to work on starting and upwind progress.
This is planned for the 22nd of April, Sunday, start at the water at 13:30.
Any cadet is welcome to join in, in any boat, help will be given to those who ask for it.
It is up to the parents / grandparents to encourage and take their sailors along.
There will be a sailor’s meeting at cadet night, Friday the 13th of April at 7 pm.
Let’s discuss our experience last Sunday, first session on the water!
De-brief.
Starting, stopping.
What to do to get a good start?
