Twenty TBYC Cadets in twelve boats competed in the Matt Dear Trophy at Thames Estuary Yacht Club on Saturday. This prodigious trophy, in memory of Matthew Dear who tragically lost his life after taking Anabolic steroids, is to raise the awareness of the dangers to young people.
The Cadets hugged the start line and fought for a prime positions, making a good start. After an unfortunate port-starboard collision, Adam and Robin emerged 2nd and 3rd, both in Lasers. Meanwhile the RS Fevas were battling through the fleet soon gaining 4th 5th and 6th positions. Those Cadets in Picos were fighting the waves holding their positions as the winds increased. By the end of the race our TBYC Cadets gained 2nd (Adam), 3rd (Luke and Sam), 4th (Robin), 5th (Hannah and Lydia), 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th 10th, 11th, 14th and 16th out of 29 boats.
Although we did not get first place, Adam held onto his 2nd place throughout the race and received his well deserved trophy and gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the visitors. Well done Cadets!!
This annual charity race was first held in 2010 in memory of Matthew Dear, who tragically passed away in 2009. The aim of the charity is to raise awareness of the dangers of Anabolic steroids and appearance and performance enhancing drugs. See www.matthewdearfoundaion.co.uk for more information.

Thanks to the Race Officer, Assistant Race Officer and six safety crew members who turned up early this morning dressed head to toe in what could only be described as Ocean Wet Gear. All to support club racing in what would have been testing conditions. As Duty Officer is was great to see such commitment from this group of members doing their bit for TBYC.

DELAYED DUE TO HIGH WIND FORECAST – RE-RUN TBA
Many of you may be aware of the Endeavour Trophy. Named after the 1934 British Entry to the America’s Cup. The Endeavour is the annual “Champion of Champions” race held at the Royal Corinthian YC in Burnham.
The much coveted (and extremely valuable) trophy can only be entered if you have won a National Class Championship within that year. All classes sail the same dinghy – currently RS200’s over a weekend’s fleet racing in a series of very short upwind/downwind courses.
This year the RCYC have introduced a Keelboat version of the trophy. This will be sailed on September 22nd and 23rd using the 707 yacht. The RCYC have a fleet of these boats, all newly fitted out and ready to race. The type of racing is designed to make exciting, high speed sailing and minimise the spread in the fleet. With a target time of 15 minutes per race, the emphasis is on as many short races in as quick succession as possible. The winner of this event will be invited to compete in the main Endeavour Trophy event in mid October.
Peter Thompson, this year’s Sandhopper National Champion, has put together a team and has entered the event on behalf of the Sandhopper Class and Thorpe Bay Yacht Club. His crew will be made up of: Mark Dell, Paul Beasley and Chris Clarke. All of whom are among our club’s top sailors.
They will be competing against this year’s National Champions from the following classes: Squib, Sonata, RCOD, J24 and Flying Fifteen. All of these will be top class sailors and the racing, now with the addition of the Sandhopper Class, will be very exciting to watch from the banks of the Crouch. So, do come along and support them if you can.
The very best of luck boys! https://royalcorinthian.co.uk/endeavour/
