Cadet Week 2018 – What a Great Week

Published by under Cadets

Last week TBYC had 136 cadets taking to the water from the age of 4-16 in what must have been the warmest Cadet Week ever! They participated in 4 groups depending on both age and ability. The amazing hot weather over the first day or 2 meant that the youngest cadets were able gain imperative water confidence while the older cadets explored the local area including the Mulberry Harbour and lifeboat Station at the end of the Pier. Over the week the wind increased enough to get lots of sailing, tactics and racing completed in all groups. The eldest Cadets enjoyed a trip to Canvey Yacht club for an overnight camp on Wednesday. By the last day all the groups were competing in races with many of the cadets helming solo for the first time.

The busy sailing schedule was also complimented by a full social programme. On the Monday we completed a beach clean with the support of Surfers Against Sewage and local groups, followed by bowling; Tuesday night saw all the cadets enjoying different activities from a ‘surf simulator’, animal encounters with snakes, as well as, pottery painting. On Thursday evening we had our main prize giving attended by many of our kind sponsors. The week ended for the cadets with a disco before the adults’ party on Saturday. This programme was supported by the companies that provided entertainment for which we were very grateful!

TBYC Cadet Week would not be such an astonishing event without the continued support of our sponsors; IT Method, White and Co, Dedman Gray, Thorpe Hall School, MSW Accountants, Johnson Gillies, Wetsuit Outlet, Merenda Insurance, Kumoun, Sullivan’s Cards and Gifts and Wet’n’Dry. All the Cadets and the Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors for supporting the week and enabling the Cadet committee to provide the week in its current format.

A big thank you goes to those who lent us RIB’s and all the volunteers who turn up each day (many without children taking part) to ensure the smooth running of the event. From road crossing, bin emptying, RIB recovery. Every job is essential, so THANK YOU! This year we also welcomed many former cadets back to help coach and encourage the next generation of sailors which is fantastic; hopefully many will be back again next year!

Next year’s Cadet Week has been confirmed as the week beginning the 29th July 2019. If you are interested in sponsoring or volunteering, please contact us via Janet or Jeremy.

Cadet Week loose ends

3 days to go and it’s looking hot hot hot for next week so plan ahead. Hydration and sunscreen, maybe a beach tent for some groups?

Club Picos are not available to use till Sat 28th. They are being used for sail training Saturday and booked out for Cadet Week. If you have arranged with me to use a club boat during Cadet week, please see me during registration on Sunday (16:30-17:30) to collect your sails.

I have put all the groupings and volunteer rotas on the Cadet notice board in the front of the club. Please take time to check your volunteer role, child’s cadet group and that their boat, sail number and crew are as expected. Please make any amendments on the paper notice board copies. If you with to swap a volunteer duty please write your SWAP on the lists by 16:30 Sunday and see me to tell me what you have agreed.

If you are helping on the stingray beach you will be expected to be dressed to be in the water. Piranha helpers may be in the water if they feel able to help cadets sail, or in a rescue boat starting, timing and recording the results of games and races.

The front Car Park will not be used for the duration of the Week, so please do not park in or block the entrance to the front car park.

Cadets are welcome to Sundays registration, but not required, parents simply need to turn up and pick up their cadets paper bag full of goodies.

Thanks everyone for their hard work, help and sponsorship, without it we could not plan such a fun packed week for our cadets. Take a moment to read this years sponsors, they deserve our thanks and support.

See you on the water soon
Jeremy
