Cadet Sail and Race Training

Published by under Cadets

Last week, over 20 Cadets attended a 3 Day Race Training Event for 11+ year olds. Twelve boats took to the water on the last day of the School Easter holidays and enjoyed some intense training to boost their skills and confidence in making good starts and effective beating.  On Saturday, the wind disappeared and we were left with a bunch of eager youngster in their wetsuits still ready to go.  Although, sailing was impossible, we engaged in paddle races and a trip to the ‘Jack-up barge’ (looking like an Oil Rig) moored just inside the deep water channel. On Sunday, the wind improved and training resumed. Tacking was fast and furious, as the Cadets took their training seriously and progress was being made by all. At the de-briefing, it was clear to see that everyone had enjoyed their time on the water and their efforts had improved their Racing ability.  Congratulations to those gaining the first three positions in the main two races:  Friday, 1st Isabella and Sophie, 2nd Dom and Tom, 3rd Daniel.  Sunday, 1st Daniel (Pico) and Luke (Laser), 2nd Sam and Louise, 3rd Adam and Taylor.

This weekend:

Saturday:  Stage 2 training (prebooked) with Nick Cotgrove,

Sunday:     Cadet Sail Training with Andras Gal

Next Sunday 29th April:     Cadet Race Training 11+ with Nick Alston

Family night (Friday 20th) Sailing kit exchange

Summer has arrived just in time for our first Oppie Beach club. We start this Saturday at 14:00 (changed by the back of the clubhouse). Oppie Beach Club is open to all cadets and adults new to sailing who wish to get on the water for some informal tuition, practice skills form last year or just get in a boat with someone else for the first time. Parents are expected to help hold boats in the water if their child is participating.

On Friday at 7pm we will be going down to the dinghy park to look at how to rig different boats. This is useful for cadets and adults who don’t know or can’t quite remember how to rig and Oppie, Pico or Laser.

In the bar before and after the rigging session I am going to trial a Sailing kit exchange where you can bring any unwanted or too small kit and donate it to the cadets, if the kit is what you need for this year then you may take it and will be expected to provide a small paper donation do the Cadet fund. Thank you.
