BIG Thanks.

Published by under Bilge,Cruising

On behalf of Bob Crane and myself a big thank you to Peter Thompson and Steve Hopper for their invaluable help between 00:15 and 04:00 last Saturday bringing some of the Cruisers as well as the committee boat onto the shore ready for the cranes to lift out. As well as being hard work it was a joy to work with them both. I personally learnt from Peter how valuable a stern line can be as well as receiving a  fantastic fully clothed swimming lesson.

A sincere thanks very much guys. Wayne & Bob.

John Margarson – Progress Report. No.2 – 01-06-2010

Published by under Cruising

Due to the fact that I moved house over the weekend I did not update you all on John’s progress as much as I had planned to. Unfortunately John has had to turn back some 1490km out due to severe storm damage. He is safe but no doubt disappointed.

However here are his messages leading up to and after his decision to turn back.

Solo Ocean Sailing – John Margarson

Published by under Cruising

Solo Ocean Sailing - John MargarsonCharles Devenport made me a new radial cut main and suggested I should publish events, later Chris Maloney  had the same idea and when Wayne got on my case I knew I had to tap the typewriter.

Events started 3 years ago when I bought a Kelt in the Algarve and TBYC member “Little Ray” volunteered to sail it back. Just before leaving he asked who else was coming? I replied that I wasn’t overly concerned as I had sailed approaching 100,000 ocean miles solo and shorthanded. There was a long silence then the Old Boy said “yes John but that was 30 years ago”, I was very very upset that he should think I was past it.

A few months later I became aware of a Jester solo race from Plymouth to Azores and I entered on my little Thorpe Bay mud boat. The solo delivery of 300 miles through the busiest shipping lanes in the world went well in 52 hours so I had confidence to continue the 1200 miles to Terceira.

I have sailed through the Azores before and the renowned High pressure can be a problem through lack of wind ; I had 36 hours of no wind which is pretty normal. I also had a period of 5 days hard on the wind in a good Force Six. I completed the trip in just under 12 days and was the third monohull out of 45 starters. I was very pleased with the position as the two boats ahead were fast bulb keel racing boats with experienced Skippers. The winning boat was based on an elongated minitransat, a rocket of a boat that only arrived 24 hrs ahead of my Kelt. Continue Reading »

Bon Voyage & God Speed

Published by under Club Notices,Cruising

I’m sure for all those that know him you will join me in wishing John Margarson Bon voyage and god speed.

We look forward to your safe return and the return party???.

For those that do not know John, he sailed his boat Fluffy, a Fgaro 1 to Plymouth a few weeks ago and is about to return to her to ready himself for his next Jester Challenge.

This  leaves Plymouth on the 23rd May 2010 across the Atlantic for Rhode Island USA. A  single handed challenge with no rules as such; and is for boats under 30ft.

The details of which are here:-  http://www.jesterinfo.org/

If you are interested once John is under way his position can be tracked at this website. (I checked it today and it looks like his been pacing round the house).
