Laser Open Meeting

Published by under Monohulls

3 Lasers traveled to Fishers Green Sailing Club on Saturday 27th June and were greeted with bacon butties, hot sun and a gentle breeze. There were 20 boats entered 7 of which were visitors. They have a large lake with numerous islands to navigate around which made for challenging moves down the runs to see which side of them to go. Local knowledge prevailed here big time as the wind shifts were massive, and getting on the wrong side of one cost you many places as i found out to my cost a few times ! This really is a lovely small friendly club who were very appreciative of us attending, i really would recommend it as one to do again next year. Well done to Chris Tillyer who scored a 2,3,2,3 to secure 2nd overall from the club hotshot.
I had a 10,8,7,6 for 8th overall, and Jeremy Doran had a 13,12,13,15 for 12th overall, and is improving at every event he attends.

New Cadet Racing

This Sunday is our next session in the ‘New Cadet Race’ Series.

Let’s have a big turn-out!!!!

  • The new course is aimed at all Cadets who can sail and to wish participate in a race with a shorter course, more laps over a reduced time.
  • There will be prizes for the older cadet as well as the less experienced sailors. A coach in a dedicated Support Rib will support the races.

Races will be raced under the TBYC Sailing Instructions. http://www.tbyc.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/TBYC_2015_SI.pdf

  • There will be an optional briefing at 08.00 (1 hour before start.)
  • The race will be a windward leeward course starting at the committee boat. It will be the second start with the Fast and Slow Monohulls at 09.03. (Time plus 3 minutes).
  • First check the number of laps on the blackboard at the top of the slipway and / or check with Support Rib on the water. Your race does not use a shortened course.
  • Once on the water, go to the Committee boat and look for the last number on the BACK of the boat, which indicates D on the diagram / or check with Support Rib on the water.
  • On the starting signal, you will cross the line and beat to the CADET BUOY, which is a special buoy marked with a C. This will be your windward mark.
  • Check whether a Red or Green flag is displayed on the Committee boat; Red leave marks to port, Green leave marks to starboard.
  • Run or reach down to the course. You must NOT go through the line on the downwind leg (as in the sailing instructions).
  • Beat up through the line and onto the Cadet buoy and continue until the displayed number of laps are completed.
  • As you cross the line the committee boat will record your time. They will not give you a signal. The Support Rib will blow a whistle unless is needed elsewhere.

Laser Open Meeting

Published by under Monohulls

Four Lasers travelled from TBYC to Aldenham Sailing Club on Sunday 7th June, it was part of the Thames grand prix series and had a turnout of 27 boats, the wind was a lovely 8-10mph with a few large gusts thrown in from various angles just to keep you on your toes, and any missed tack or gybe could lose you half a dozen boats as the fleet was very very tight. There were some very good sailors from the circuit there with brand new boats, so it was good to see how we are doing outside of club racing, and also a test of the rules as these guys do not take prisoners !! Our overall results were Rick Paxman 11th, Nick Turner 13th, Jeremy Doran 24th, Richard Sands 25th. Lovely small and friendly club and a really good lake to do our 1st “pond” open on.

New Cadet Racing – Finding a crew or helm

I have been contacted by several parents who have recently introduced their child to sailing at the club and are keen to participate in the New Cadet Racing and training.

However, they are either a helm (have a boat) and are seeking a crew or wish to crew.

I am happy to co-ordinate information, allowing youngsters to pair up and enjoy sailing together.

If you are interested, please provide the following details via my E-Mail below:

Name
Age ( Our target age for these sessions is Year 7 and above)
Boat (if appropriate)
Helm want a crew, Wants to crew
Approximate experience
Telephone number
E-mail address

I will then share this information.
