A Class Nationals Report

Published by under Catamarans,Nationals

The UK A-Class Nationals at Canvey started in sunny summer conditions with 14 boats from around the UK and Piet Saarberg from Holland competing and quickly ended up as winter, as very wet squally weather blew through. Friday was a sunny balmy 20 odd degrees and wind of 10-15kts, just perfect for A’s and the fleet started to enjoy the close racing around a typical upwind around spreader and down to go through a gate before heading back through the start/finish line. This was going to cause problems when the Canvey cat open were going to join in on the same course on the Saturday/Sunday.

Saturday! And what a difference 24hrs makes, wind now a steady 18-25kts and white crested waves, God knows how the A’s hate waves. The boats are very strong and being made out of Carbon, 75kg all up weight, very light and can fly off waves rather than cut through them. The race officer says the game is on and the mixed fleet of catamarans and the A’s

Head out to the start line before long several boats retire because of the conditions. First start for the A’s gets abandoned when heavy squall comes through and knocks several boat down but most are fine and the problem is were too quick around the course and catch up with the 3rd start which are flattened on the start line and we have to sail around the carnage. Typical I have a good start and in 3rd place, never mind back to the beginning and 20min wait till wind abates to a reasonable level. Off we go again and getting good starts and end the day in 4th place after six races, had to come in on the 6th race due to shackle on the main sheet failing and had give the spare to another competitor just before the race, Mmm! Won’t do that again.

Sunday was meant to be light winds and sunny, how the meteorologist’s

Get it so wrong, strong squally winds and rain yet again and some of the fleet head in early as the start is delayed and the wind changes direction yet again. I think the race officer and team did a great job in getting two final races off, as the weather was so changeable. Final out come I finished in a credible 4th position behind a former UK champion, European champion and a up and coming star in the form of Sam aged 24yrs, Lucky B**tard to have started so young in the class.

Feva Nationals Well Done

Published by under Cadets,Nationals

A huge thank you to all the club members who gave up their time to help run this event. We had over 50 members helping to run the sailing and on shore management.

The event attracted 92 boats from all over the Country with two boats attending from the Netherlands. In total we hosted over 350 parents and children.

Well done to the 5 Crews from the TBYC Feva Class – who all had a great time and did exceedingly well in this their first Nationals.

The RS Feva Class Association declared the event a total success with many more compliments from parents of visitors.

A proud moment in time for Thorpe Bay Yacht Club.

Nationals Update

Published by under Nationals

The Southend Echo has this morning published a story regarding this event. The story is, in our view, totally inaccurate and damaging to the Event and the Sport as a whole. The actual facts of the story are that a competitor capsized his boat and injured himself. He was retruned to shore with his crew and he walked to the awaiting first aid unit of TBYC and was taken to hospital as a precaution, as he was mildly concust.

The competitor returned to the club last evening and is now considering completing the event today.

The event is progressing very well and the final two races will be sailed later today.

National Squad Selection

Published by under Cadets,Nationals

Four young people from TBYC have been selected for the UK Cadet Class National Squad. They are: Alex Warrington sailing with Ellie Wootton from Waldringfield SC, Ben Warrington sailing with Kat Selfe from Stone SC and Matthew & Katy Lloyd both from a lot closer to home.

The aim of the National Squad is to train promising young sailors over the winter with a view to them qualifying in the spring for the team to represent the UK at the World Championships in Belgium next July.

Team TBYC at the Sprint Nationals

Published by under Catamarans,Nationals,Racing

There was a record turn out for recent years of 83 Sprint 15’s  at the Sprint National Champioinships on 18th to 20th August 2012 at Brightlingsea –  bolstered by 17 Sprints from Thorpe Bay.

Well done Team Thorpe Bay for flying the Club Flag ( Rob Bailey, Gary Burrows, Nick Cotgrove, Graham Dare, Clive Dilliway, Martyn Ellis, Darren Fitchew, Andrew Hannah, Howard Hawkes, Steve Healey, Alan Leonard, Keith Persin, Theresa Ryall, Stefan Smith, Conrad Stevenson, Gary Sverdloff, Gerald Sverdloff)

The best 3 TBYC boats were:

  • Howard Hawkes – 14th ( best race 4th)
  • Martyn Ellis – 21st ( best race 4th)
  • Gary Sverdloff – 25th ( best race 3rd)

There were a number of general recalls and a few black flags but a  good time was had by all both on and off the water.
