The annual Nore race is being run this Sunday by Benfleet Yacht Club.
As an additional safety measure members are being asked to sign out and back in at the bosun’s hut at the top of the slipway, so that we are aware of how many boats are taking part and to ensure that all have returned safely at the end of the day.
The winds for the Nore Race on Sunday 30th June are predicted to be F2/3 gusting 4, from the West or WSW. Just right.
It might change but the days before and after also look good so if the weather slips or accelerates there is still a good chance of good sailing weather.
At Benfleet Yacht Club we expect entrants to wait and check the weather carefully.
So we will keep the race sheets open until Saturday 2pm.
The extra time should make it possible to take late entries by hand to the clubhouse.
It should be a great day’s sailing, and we have the Prizegiving evening to look forward to on Friday 5th July.
See you there! Phil Bostock, Sailing Sec for BYC
The Nore Race is sponsored by Dauntless Boat Yard, and has been for years.
The decision was made this morning to postpone the Regatta and the Chris Hull Memorial Trophy due to the conditions and forecast for the day. We would like to thank all those who have turned up both days, only to end up going home without a sail.
We have provisionally rescheduled the Regatta for the August bank holiday 3 days 24th, 25th and 26th. With 3 days, afternoon tides and a Beach BBQ already scheduled for the Saturday evening. We will confirm this after next month’s Sailing Committee meeting when we finalise arrangements. We would welcome any comments or suggestions prior to the meeting, so if you have any ideas or requests for the event, let us know.
Enjoy the rest of the day and lets hope for more favourable conditions next weekend, when we have Saturday afternoon racing and Tops series, then the BYC Nore Race on Sunday. Entries for the Nore race need to be with Benfleet by 21:00hrs on Friday 28th June. If you cannot get your entry to Benfleet in time, members of the Sailing Committee will be attending a safety briefing at BYC on Thursday and can take any entries with us.
Once again, conditions today have been consistently poor. For the safety of all involved, Alan, Tony and I took the decision this morning to postpone racing till tomorrow.
Those of you following the weather station would have seen at 11 o’clock the wind was still up at 30mph, and has remained so all day, with gusts up to 40mph this afternoon. The decision was not taken lightly, and disappointing to all who had put in a lot of time and effort planning and preparing for this weekend. We were all keen to enjoy some good competitive racing today.
Looking forward to tomorrow, Races 1-3 are postponed to Sunday 23rd June, first Warning signal 10.27. Races 4-6 will follow immediately after Races 1-3.
The first race on Sunday 23rd June will also be the Chris Hull Memorial Trophy for Windward/Leeward Catamarans, as originally scheduled.
We will meet tomorrow morning at 09:00 to review the conditions and plan for the day, when the club will be open for breakfast, with tea and coffee available from the bar. Even if conditions are poor, I am sure, like today, if you wait an hour there will be some Sprints in action to entertain us from the bar!
I hope to see many of you at the club tonight to enjoy the BBQ, Beer… and foam!
Saturdays sailing has been cancelled due to current wind conditions. Sunday however is expected to start at 10:30 as expected.
The barbecue party is still taking place, with Groovy Tunes Foam Disco, from 6pm. £8 for adults including BBQ, salads and a beer or wine, £3.50 for children with a soft drink. Tickets available from the bar.
