RRS 62 – Seeking redress

I wish to record my displeasure with the actions of the race officer and his team yesterday, Sunday January 29th.

Just because our new committee boat has cooking facilities does not mean that they should be used if such action could be detrimental to competitors. The smell of bacon around the committee boat and as far as 100m downwind was so strong that I almost retired after 2 laps and my third lap was impeded by an overwhelming desire to head straight for the club kitchen. Conversations that I heard seemed more concerned with whether ketchup or brown sauce was favourite than the wind conditions.

Come on chaps, have some heart.

Race Duty Management

Published by under Racing

In February 2012 the club will be introducing a web-based duty management system – ‘DutyMan’.

‘DutyMan’ requires a database of the email addresses of the 300 club members who undertake one or more race duties each year together with a database of the duties for the Duty Officer, Race Officers, and the 4 Support boat helms/crews for the 2012/13 races – starting with the Warm Up Race on 25th March 2012 through to April 2013.

‘DutyMan’ is currently used by around 150 clubs and organisations to:

  • Publish a calendar of events with allocated duties on the web, and which should always be up-to-date, accurate and definitive.
  • Automatically email members a list of their duties and duty reminders.
  • Organise duty swaps between members interactively using email to/from ‘DutyMan’ and automatically update the duty roster with agreed swops.

The databases are currently being finalised and uploaded onto the system with a view to going live in February 2012.

Members who have been allocated duties will receive an email from ‘DutyMan’ to set up their individual password.

‘DutyMan’ will be able to be accessed via a link from the club website.

If you Google ‘DutyMan’ you will be able to see presentational videos of how the system works.

Frozen Sheets Race Notice – amended results

FROZEN SHEETS OPEN MEETING 27 DECEMBER 2011

The Race Committee announce that the previously published results were calculated in error not in accordance with the Racing Rules of Sailing and the Sailing Instructions. The error is now remedied with the publication of correct results.

Background

The Sailing Instructions state the following:

1. Unless the number of rounds was signalled in advance then after an appropriate sailing time has elapsed International Code Flag S would be displayed and boats would be finished when they next passed through the finish line.

2. Scoring would be calculated on the basis of average lap times.

3. Results would be calculated on the basis of average lap times.

After International Code Flag S had been raised, boats were finished, and the times recorded, as they next passed the finishing line. In calculating the published results the time of raising Code Flag S was reduced by a few minutes compared with the actual time of raising the flag which resulted in the last lap of 5 boats being excluded when calculating the corrected times. This was undertaken in order to make an adjustment because two classes of boat with the same PN (49er and 29er) had each been split at the time of raising the flag.

This has been reviewed. This method of adjustment of average lap times has not been used previously by the organising authority and is not part of suggested practice by the RYA, and is not therefore in accordance with the Rules or Sailing Instructions. The published results were incorrect and have now been amended.

Winter Sunday Race 5 Cancelled

Published by under Racing

Race Notice

Winter Sunday Race 5 programmed to start at 15:00 hours on Sunday 18 December 2011 is cancelled.

Reason: dusk is less than an hour after the programmed start time and it is not feasible to move the start time forward and not appropriate to run what would otherwise have to be a very short race.

This notice is posted in accordance with Section 3 of the Sailing Instructions.

RYA Powerboat Training

Published by under Club Notices,Racing

On a very cold Saturday last, we completed our second RYA Powerboat Level 2 training course this autumn, with five more Club members successfully gaining their certificates.  They are Izzy Duce, Janet Willsmer, Adrian Bunting, Allen Burrell and Brant Chapman.  Well done!

Since we registered as an RYA Training Establishment in 2009, we have trained 33 people up to Level 2.  Before that, with the support of SMAC we helped a further 20 members gain this valuable qualification.

Our team, Tony Clarke, Toby Speller and Ken Clarke, get a huge buzz from teaching on this course and as a result, we know that we are adding to the pool of skilled powerboat drivers in the Club, providing safety cover for our racing.  Without that cover, we cannot race.

If you would like to join this group and get your Level 2 qualification, contact any one of us through the office or email [email protected] and we will endeavour to sign you up for one of our 2012 sessions.  The charge of £25 covers the cost of training materials and contributes to the cost of fuel for the practical part of the course.
