Update on Beach Re-cycling.

Published by at 20:32 under Club Notices

Hopefully the recent storms are now behind us and last week the Council made a start on beach re cycling at Shoebury Common to provide some protection for the beach hut owners east of our slipway who have taken a severe pounding during the past weeks.

I fully understand the concerns by members that there is talk of the Council removing sand from the Yacht Club beach to re cycle to the beach to the east.

To advise I have received a confirmation from Richard Atkins of SBC stating that the Council Contractors will not be removing sand from the Yacht Club bay – that is between the concrete groyne and the first wooden groyne. Furthermore SBC have also confirmed the contractors will be re cycling sand later this week from the second and third bays to the west – to beach hut owners to the east as well as to the Yacht Club beach to maintain our launching facilities.

A further report to follow on the beach re cycling and proposed flood gate.

Mike, I would not trust them further than I can shift the beach!

    Agreed Ken!
The removal of beach from west to east makes no sense at all as it does that naturally. It could undermine the huts in those second and third bays. (including our own)
Sailors struggle every week to pull boats over the beach and single-handed cat sailing without help is now unavailable at TBYC.
After the first storm, launching was much easier as the beach had been eroded to firm sand. It quickly built up again. Far from needing more sand on the Yacht Club beach, we need less. The Club facilities are protected by the concrete groyne, and any beach removed at the bottom of the slope is quickly replaced as it builds against that groyne. Duncan.
