Theft prevention & security

Outboards

Thieves seem to mainly target outboards left attached to boats.  Thieves can’t sell/use an outboard with no cover, so an quick, easy, effective measure is to remove the cover when leaving the boat and replace it with a tough plastic/fabric bag, or a Marine Watch fabric cover.

Four sizes, all with Essex Police logo and Marine Watch contacts:

  1. outboards up to 5hp (£20.88)
  2. up to 10hp (£22.32),
  3. up to 40hp (£24.19) and
  4. up to 70hp (£40.32).

Remember ROPES

R emove detachable items from your boat;
O utboard – remove or consider fitting a police engine cover;
P hotograph all property;
E nhance security – consider etchings, wheel clamps on boat trailers, padlocks;
S erial numbers – record and store all numbers.

Mark property

The Cruising Secretary has an invisible ink pen for loan – write phone number on items; they shown up under ultra-violet light which police routinely use on recovered property.
