A dynamic group of youngsters represented Thorpe Bay Yacht Club in this year’s Interclub Team Race, hosted by Thames Estuary Yacht Club. Last Sunday the TBYC team won the Cadet class for the second year running. Peter Snow, Millie and Vicky Little, Greg Watson and Jacob Allard left the beach in windy conditions and were escorted around the pier to practise their starts and get used to the pretty difficult conditions. The ‘Little’ girls made an excellent start leading their class, whilst Peter Snow was steadily moving up the fleet eventually gaining first place by the end of the race. All the team performed well and are a credit to our club.
Don’t miss out on this free social event it’s open to all members and their friends. The Galley Kitchen have said they will be able to still serve people on the night even if you haven’t prebooked.

We will be offering you something slightly different this time and are very excited to announce that Oliver Tabor, a multi-award winning member of the Magic Circle and one of the top magicians in the country will be entertaining us with a night of magic. We are very fortunate to be able to welcome Oliver to the club – as you can imagine he is in great demand and gets booked up a long way in advance!
For those who wish to make a night of it, our caterers will be offering something slightly different in the form of ‘British Tapas’. Food must be booked in advance via the attached form (you will also need to book a time for dining) and the deadline for food orders is strictly 12 noon on Tuesday 29th September.
3 Thorpe Bay Lasers travelled to the lovely Tollesbury Sailing Club on Sunday 27th September, as usual we were greeted on our arrival with bacon butties and tea and coffee to start the day. There was a lovely 12mph breeze and clear blue skies. 15 Lasers entered which was 7 visitors and 8 home boats, the racing was very close and all 3 races were back to back of 2 longish laps with good beats, reaches and runs making for exciting racing in a steadily building breeze.
The end results were;
Rick Paxman 1st, 1st, 2nd for overall 1st place
Nick Turner 6th, 6th, 4th for overall 5th place
Michael Airey 11th, 7th, 6th for overall 7th place

This year’s Interclub Dinghy Team Race is hosted by Thames Estuary Yacht Club. There are fours classes:
Ingram Shield – Four boat of the same class
Operatic Cup – Any (mixed) Class
Silver Sail Trophy – Single handed Classes
Cadet Class (Under 18 years)
Our Cadets won this event last year and are entering a team to defend their title! I will be supporting them in a Safety Rib.
If any adults wish to participate, representing TBYC please contact Dave Ayre at [email protected] or 07581 288886. He will co-ordinate the adult teams. Teams of 3 or 4.
If there are more Cadets that would like to participate, they should contact me at [email protected] or 07815 113459. (Bear in mind that you need to sail around the pier).
The deadline for the forms to be submitted is Wednesday 23rd September.
Tony Clarke will continue to ensure our ribs are fuelled and ready for action, although will not be able to undertake his support boat duties for most of the rest 2015.
This will mean that we need volunteers to undertake the vacant RIB helming and RIB launching/recovery duties over this period.
RIB launching/recovery will require volunteers with a vehicle with towing point to deliver and retrieve the two RIBs between the clubhouse and the slipway on each occasion.
If you are helming or crewing a rib, you will need to ensure it is washed down, rinsed through and the cover and clamp on.
Please can those members with suitable vehicles volunteer for one or more occasions. You can volunteer through Dutyman ( a new duty of RIB launch/recovery has been added) or contact Graham Dare ( [email protected], 07946 413923)
Clearly, if we cannot get enough volunteers for RIB launching/recovery we will need to review our sailing programme.
Thank you in anticipation of your help.
