I agree. What a superb start to the Midweek racing. The mass start, with the pin end on the “wrong” side of the committee boat, ensured some fun and games!

The start line was perforce somewhat interesting, as it was impossible to cross it on starboard tack. Not surprisingly, the Snadhoppers congregated by the committee boat, to start on port. This meant they all made a good start.

Discretion is the better part of valour: the dinghies and cats resigned themselves to starting at the less favoured end, thereby avoiding carnage. There was a short beat to No 9, by which time, the Sandhoppers had been despatched to the back of the fleet.

The Sandhoppers had a good entry count because they are all retired folk with nothing to do all day. The Sprints are younger people who have to work for a living, but still managed eight starters.

I agree. A good turnout has ensured an excellent start to the Midweek racing. The combined start was especially interesting, partly because the pin end buoy was placed on the “wrong” side of the committee boat, so to speak. Furthermore, it was dropped in a position that made it impossible to cross the line on starboard tack.

Not surprisingly, the Sandhoppers congregated by the committee boat to start on port tack, thereby making good starts. Meanwhile the dinghies and cats have become wary of Sandhopper carnage, and resigned to start at the less favoured end of the line. The Sandhoppers had a good entry count because they are retired folk with nothing to do all day. The Sprints are younger sailors who need to work for a living, but still managed eight. Top man was Kyle Stoneham, who has inevitably learned a trick or two from his recent crewing in Nick Elmore’s F20.

It was also good to see a couple of our youngest cadets racing in their Pico’s. I had a quick chat with one of them last night and it seems there is quite a bit of competition between the twins. I am sure this will be good practise for the Nationals next month.

If any other cadets want to join in with the club racing but are a little nervous then please speak with Mike, Rupert or me.
