The standard of racing was extremely high at this year’s BSDRA Thames Valley Team Racing Championships at Bray lake.
There were 21 teams competing, aged between 12 and 18 in a total of 106 races on Saturday 7th June. During the first set of races the teams are seeded into four divisions, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Novices. Our young TBYC team won enough races to be placed in the Bronze division, which was an achievement in itself. |
They continued to communicate and sail well as a team, and considering their overall age, their sailing was impressive, against much older sailors. They performed a number of Pass-backs, Mark traps and Pinning maneuvers and were determined right to the end.
It may have been a most daunting experience at times, but they achieved a pleasing =12th place out of 21 teams. They were awarded the Best Newcomers’ Cup! |

Team racing demands a very different skill set to fleet racing and I’m impressed. Well done Team TBYC and Nick.
Yes, it’s great to see more of our cadets getting involved in technical racing…. interestingly, the RYA have recognised that Team GBR would have won more medals in 2012 had we been better at team / match racing and are pushing it hard…. well done!
Yes all credit to Nick for giving up his time and pushing this through. Watching the racing, the team sailed really well – Robin is right team racing is a very different skill to fleet racing, especially fleet racing on a wide open space like the estuary. There was some great boat handling on display, and some dogged determination when sailing the half submerged 420’s (luckily these were only one flight out of loads of evenly matched Fireflys.!) Top stuff Nick!
